Editorial – Winter 2015
Chaos and Alienation – two terms that most of us associate with negative connotations. Words like these often remind us of darkness. However, darkness is just the absence of light – a temporary state that prepares us for a new beginning. The same way chaos and alienation prepare us to immerse in a state of creation. The ancient civilizations were aware of this. According to Greek Mythology, Chaos was immense void – the first thing that ever existed in the world, the primordial condition, the sacred material from which sprang everything in our world, including the deities. This issue is a tribute to chaos, alienation, and every similar state that the temporary prevalence of darkness can produce. We invite you to celebrate them through various literary works from all over the world, and experience them as vital states that lead to the return of light, rebirth and creation, and perhaps go back to a state of innocence, for innocence can also be seen as being accepting.
It must also be pointed out that literature is a means that can enable us to surpass any negative state. It can connect every human being despite his or her background, it can bring together people from all over the world and make them believe into the vital notions of humanity’s wellbeing, such as brotherhood and solidarity. Through literary works we can immerse in different cultures and civilizations and become aware of the various aspects of the human psyche. Therefore, reading is a wonderful process similar to the archetypical hero’s journey in world mythology, storytelling and drama. The naïve hero accepts the call to adventure into a region of supernatural wonder. He encounters superior forces and wins a decisive victory. During this adventure he is transformed and returns home mature and wise.
Thus, we invite you to a similar quest throughout world literature. A colorful journey which will enable you to experience powerful feelings, gain insight into foreign cultures and understand that despite their cultural differences, human beings have many similarities. Prachya Review announces its cooperation with , Chalice a Greek literary webzine which focuses both on Greek and world literature. This collaboration will give to our readers the chance not only to gradually immerse in Greek literature and feel its influences from both its glorious past and its sun-drenched glorious landscape, but also to find out other important literatures that Chalice focuses on, such as the Arabic. Our goal is to establish links with more literary magazines from all over the world and create a net which will promote literature and cultural interchange. It is the beginning of our quest which will take place in all corners of our beautiful planet.
